How To: Find the Best Sleep Position While Pregnant

Around week 22 of my pregnancy it was becoming more challenging to find a comfortable position. Especially since I was a stomach sleeper. I had to go through the frustration of teaching myself how to sleep on my side. Yesterday I had a pregnant friend of mine ask me about the safest and comfortable positions to sleep in. I told her what worked for me and what my doctor told me would be safe for my baby as I slept. I told her sleeping on my right side was more comfortable to me but my doctor told me that my left side would be safer for my growing belly. I also told her that I slept with a pillow between my legs and under my stomach to keep my back in alignment as best I could and to evenly distribute the weight. That worked the best for me.

Here are the suggestions that my doctor told me: Do's and Don'ts

Don'ts-

1. Do not sleep on your back. The reasoning behind this is because your might cause stomach trouble later by putting unwanted pressure on your intestines.
2. Do not sleep on your stomach. It would be unwise to put pressure on your uterus in turn putting pressure on your baby. Another reason is because of your growing breasts causing pain.

Do's-

1. Sleep on your left side. Laying on your left side increases circulation making it easier to get the nutrient filled blood to your baby.
2. Buy a full sized body pillow. Not only will it make you more comfortable but it will be easier for you to stay on your side.
3. Experiencing shortness of breath? Put a pillow underneath your side to raise your chest.
4. Having heartburn? Put some books, planks of wood, or some bricks underneath the head of the bed to raise you up a little. This helps keep the burning sensation down in your stomach rather than having it burning in your throat all night.
